# Why ChatGPT Is Not Citing My Website

ChatGPT not citing your website usually traces to one of eight root causes, ranked here by how often they show up in our audits.

## The 8 reasons

1. **GPTBot is blocked in robots.txt.** Most common cause. Add explicit Allow rules for GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, OAI-SearchBot.
2. **No FAQPage or HowTo schema.** Plain prose FAQ is invisible to most engines. Wrap in JSON-LD with 8-15 entries per landing page.
3. **The lede buries the answer.** ChatGPT lifts the lede. If the first paragraph is marketing wind-up, the model lifts a competitor's lede instead. Rewrite first 60 words definition-first.
4. **Inconsistent entity data across the web.** Mismatches in business name, description, address, founding date across homepage, GBP, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, Wikidata reduce confidence.
5. **The page does not rank in Bing.** ChatGPT search uses Bing as live retrieval. Add Bing Webmaster Tools, submit sitemap, fix Bing-specific indexing.
6. **No Person schema or AuthorCard on bylined content.** Add Person JSON-LD with jobTitle, knowsAbout, sameAs to LinkedIn.
7. **Stale dateModified.** Pages last edited 2022-2023 lose to fresher competitor pages. Update when shipping real edits.
8. **Category dominated by older training-data signals.** Shift effort to live-retrieval engines (Perplexity, AI Overviews) while feeding training-data layer through authoritative mentions.

## Priority order

Day 1: robots.txt. Day 2-3: entity consistency. Day 4-7: FAQPage and HowTo schema. Day 8-14: definition-first ledes. Day 15-21: Person schema and AuthorCard. Day 22-28: dateModified refresh. Day 29-30: re-run citation tracker.
