## What is Open Dental?

Open Dental is a dental practice management system (PMS) used to manage patients, appointments, operatories, providers, recall lists, and CDT procedure codes. It exposes a REST API (with the eConnector for on-premise installations and direct access for Open Dental Cloud), which is what makes a real-time AI voice integration possible rather than theoretical. Ainora connects to that API and turns phone calls into structured appointments inside Open Dental.

## What does the Open Dental integration do?

When the AI handles a call, it:

- **Schedules providers in real time** - the AI queries Open Dental operatory schedules during the call and offers only available slots for the right provider and procedure type. No double-booking, no manual checks.
- **Looks up patient records** - returning patients are identified by phone number via the Open Dental API, greeted by name, and their provider and relevant history are pulled up.
- **Registers new patients** - for first-time callers, the AI collects name, date of birth, phone, email, insurance info, and chief complaint, then creates a new patient record in Open Dental.
- **Books by procedure** - the AI maps patient requests to Open Dental procedure codes, so a cleaning (D1110) gets 60 minutes and an emergency exam (D0140) gets 20, with the correct provider, operatory, and duration.

**What if Open Dental is down during a call?**
