What is Notion AI?
Notion AI is not a separate product you buy and connect. It is the AI surface of the Notion workspace, and Notion describes the packaging directly: "Notion AI is included with Notion's Business and Enterprise plans, with core features like Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, and Enterprise Search. Workspaces on other plans get a limited amount of trial usage to try it out."
That is the whole thesis, and it is a good one. If your handbook, your project docs, your meeting notes and your specs already live in Notion, the assistant starts with the corpus rather than having to build one. Teams that buy a separate enterprise search product spend their first quarter indexing; teams already on Notion do not.
The trade-off is the mirror image. Notion AI is excellent at questions whose answer is written down in Notion, and structurally unsuited to work that happens outside a document. It has no phone channel. It is a place where knowledge is written, not a place where a customer is spoken to.
On training, Notion's position is the correct polarity and worth saying plainly, because several vendors in this field are the other way round: "By default, Notion and its AI Subprocessors do not use Customer Data to train any models. We specifically have contractual agreements in place with our AI Subprocessors that prohibit the use of Customer Data to train their models." The pricing page repeats it as an opt-in: "Notion AI will not use your data to train our models unless you opt in to a request to share your data." Opt-in means off unless the customer acts. Slack, by contrast, requires an email to opt out of its predictive global models.
Notion also names its model providers rather than hiding them: "Notion currently utilizes various large language models (LLMs) hosted by Notion as well as by organizations such as Anthropic and OpenAI."
Does Notion AI keep EU data in the EU?
Storage can be. Inference is a different question, and Notion is the only vendor in this field that answers it clearly, in its own documentation, against its own interest. That candour is why this page treats Notion as the reference text on the residency question rather than as the worst offender.
Three facts about the feature itself, all from Notion's data residency help page. The regions are "EU-Central-1 (Frankfurt) EU-West-1 (Ireland)". It is tier-gated: "Data residency is available free of charge to customers on the Enterprise Plan." And it is sales-gated, which is the part that surprises buyers who assumed a setting: "Until you contact Notion and receive confirmation that migration is complete, your workspace data will remain hosted in the United States." Notion Calendar, Notion Mail and any Beta Services are excluded from residency entirely.
Then, under its own heading "When is Customer Data processed outside the data region?", the sentence that makes this the most quotable page in the field:
"Processing of Customer Data outside the data region can include: Customer Data processed by Notion subprocessors, including LLM providers"
Read Notion's own FAQ answer carefully
The same page carries an FAQ that asks one question and answers a slightly different one. The question is whether Customer Data is stored in the data region when using Notion AI. The answer:
"The categories of Customer Data described above are stored in the data region with the data residency feature. The large language model (LLM) providers we use to provide Notion AI utilize zero data retention for Enterprise Plan workspaces, so no data is stored with LLM providers."
The claim is that nothing is stored at the LLM provider. It is not a claim that inference happens in the EU. Put the two passages together and the honest reading is storage in Frankfurt or Ireland, inference wherever the subprocessor runs. That is not a gotcha. It is exactly what the vendor wrote, and Notion deserves credit for writing it where a buyer can find it.
The field context matters here more than the vendor comparison. Across the nine internal-assistant vendors we checked on 2026-09-06, not one promises that AI inference happens inside the customer's chosen EU region. Microsoft documents routing to the United States, Canada or Australia as a default for eligible tenants created after 25 March 2026. Slack's residency documentation lists the categories it covers and AI is not among them. If EU processing of AI requests is a hard requirement for you, it is a question to put in writing to every vendor on your shortlist, not a box any of them tick today.
How long is Notion AI data retained?
Notion publishes actual periods, which is more than several vendors in this field manage. Zero data retention at the LLM provider on Enterprise; 30 days or fewer everywhere else; and where a feature needs a data-retaining model, that model is off until an administrator turns it on.

Which certifications does Notion hold?
Notion holds SOC 2 Type 2 and four ISO standards. The AI-specific one is not among them, and the reason we can say that flatly is that Notion counts them itself:
"ISO is an international standard development organization, and Notion has achieved certifications for four ISO standards: ISO 27001, ISO 27701, ISO 27017, and ISO 27018."
The word four is what makes this an enumeration rather than a sample. The absence of ISO 42001, the management-systems standard for AI, is therefore established by the vendor's own sentence and not by a search that might simply have used the wrong pattern. It is a real gap against Microsoft, Google, Slack and Glean, all of which claim ISO 42001.
Notion AI itself is covered by the certifications Notion does hold: "Notion AI is included in the scope of Notion's SOC 2 Type 2 report and ISO 27001 certification". Scope statements like that matter more than the badge, because a certificate covering the corporate platform but excluding the AI feature would tell a buyer very little.
For completeness, and because a comparison a reader can catch out is worthless: Ainora holds no SOC 2 report of any type and no ISO certification of any kind. Notion is ahead of us on that axis and we are not going to arrange a table to disguise it.

A note on the Enterprise number you may have seen quoted elsewhere. A USD 35.00 per month Enterprise seat figure is carried in the pricing page's own price object, alongside identifiers that corroborate a May 2025 repricing and a Q1 2026 increase. We are not calling it a published list price, because it is not one: the page a buyer actually sees says "Custom pricing". Treat it as an anchor for a negotiation, not as a quote.
The pattern worth naming: bundle, then meter. On 13 May 2025 Notion announced that "The Business Plan & Enterprise Plan now include unlimited usage of Notion AI, including enterprise search, research mode, and AI meeting notes." The current product page states that "your access to AI features can be temporarily reduced depending on your usage" and that "Starting May 4, 2026: Custom Agents will start using Notion credits when they run. Admins can purchase additional credits, and if credits are insufficient, agents will automatically pause until more are added." Unlimited lasted about a year.
This is not a Notion problem, it is a field pattern with dates on it. Google bundled Gemini into paid Workspace tiers on 15 January 2025. Atlassian bundled Rovo on 9 April 2025 and now meters credits with overage enabled by default. Slack retired its separate AI add-on on 17 August 2025. Notion bundled on 13 May 2025 and began metering agent runs on 4 May 2026. If you are modelling a three-year cost for any assistant in this category, model the meter, not the bundle.

Verdict: Who Should Use Notion AI?
If your team already runs on Notion, Notion AI is close to a free win and the burden of proof is on anything else: the corpus is there, the assistant is bundled, training is off by default, and the retention numbers are published. Two things to settle before you commit. If EU processing matters, read the residency page yourself and note that it is Enterprise-only, requires a conversation with Notion, and does not extend to the LLM providers. If ISO 42001 is on your procurement checklist, Notion does not hold it and says so by implication in its own enumeration. And if the work you actually need done is a customer conversation rather than a document, Notion AI is the wrong shape entirely. That is where an EU-native, multi-channel product such as Ainora belongs, alongside Notion rather than instead of it.
Best Notion AI Alternatives in 2026
1. Ainora

2. Microsoft 365 Copilot
The direct rival if your documents live in SharePoint rather than Notion. USD 30.00 per user per month paid yearly, on top of a qualifying Microsoft 365 licence. Holds ISO 27001 and ISO 42001, which Notion does not. Its EU story is the opposite trade: better certifications, worse default, since flex routing sends inferencing to the United States, Canada or Australia by default for eligible tenants created after 25 March 2026 unless an administrator turns it off.
3. Gemini for Google Workspace
The same logic on the Google stack. Bundled into paid Workspace tiers on 15 January 2025 rather than sold as an add-on. It is the only vendor in the nine we checked that publishes a processing-region control, and that control is gated to Enterprise Plus.
4. Glean
The choice when knowledge is scattered across many SaaS tools rather than concentrated in one workspace, with permission-aware retrieval across a large connector library. Two caveats: it publishes no price, and has published none since January 2023, and its default deployment region is the United States.
5. Slack AI
For teams whose real knowledge base is the conversation, not the document. Slack retired the separate AI add-on on 17 August 2025 and folded AI into the paid plans. Slack holds ISO 42001 with downloadable certificates, which Notion does not. Its residency documentation lists the categories it covers and AI is not among them.
6. Atlassian Rovo
The right shape if your operating system is Jira and Confluence. Bundled on 9 April 2025 and metered in credits with overage on by default. Worth reading its indexing model before connecting a large Drive or SharePoint: Atlassian documents that it indexes the entire workspace of a connected app and lets you narrow it with a blocklist afterwards.
